Kitchen Becomes Open!

Valcucine at Fuorisalone

One of the first companies to move in this direction, Valcucine opens up to the shared experimentation of innovation models followed by tackling new production processes based on open source design. Once again, the company based in Friuli adopts a novel way of encouraging the return to handicraft expertise, to the ability to make connections and to create.

In Valcucine, sustainability is the real driving force behind innovation and, on the assumption that, in the future, the transfer of goods will be surpassed by the transmission of information, by means of Kitchen Becomes Open! care of dotdotdot during the Fuorisalone 2014 event, Valcucine will start on a new, pioneering path linked to a novel way of innovating, designing, producing and even transporting products.

In the Valcucine showroom in the Brera Design District of Milan, a total of ten makers and designers selected by Valcucine and dotdotdot by means of a call online will participate in a workshop on the "open source kitchen" during which they will design new elements, accessories and create new interactions for the Meccanica kitchen model by the Demode engineered by Valcucine brand.

From 6th to 11th April, the Valcucine showroom in Corso Garibaldi 99 will be transformed into a real Fablab, a digital fabrication laboratory, a place to experiment and innovate in, where the designer becomes an artisan and the artisan becomes a designer.

During the worktshop, the makers will work in close contact with the Valcucine technical department, the dotdotdot design studio and a team of experts including Massimo Menichinelli (open design facilitator), Enrico Bassi (FabLab Torino coordinator), Stefano Maffei (Professor at the Politecnico Milano), Giulio Iacchetti (designer), Dario Buzzini (design director at IDEO New York).

Meetings and debates are planned during the workshop days which will be open to the public and to which important guests will be invited to share their knowledge, skill and experience.

The projects will be presented on 11th April from 6 p.m., at the Valcucine Milan Brera showroom during the Brera Design Night and will be exhibited until Sunday, 13th April 2014.

The executable files of the project will be released in the open source mode – i.e. accessible to all – under the Creative Commons CC by-nc-sa license, i.e. with the permission to distribute, modify and create projects based on the original, except for business purposes, recognising the author's paternity of the project.

Valcucine will be back at Eurocucina 2014 to support the relaunching of Made in Italy products in the world after 12 years' participation in the Fuorisalone event.

Once again, the essence of the company's unchanging DNA, where innovation is guided by research into greater sustainability, will lead the theme of the exhibition: i.e. Sustainability driven innovation.

Pursuing sustainability is not synonymous of being ecological; it means to walk the path of ongoing improvement. The tension inherent in this goal has inspired Valcucine to be constantly innovative, to combine functionality with aesthetics, but also to embrace the idea of a conscious use of materials, always.
